Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy SEND Vision

The information below outlines the ways in which we provide support for all pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We do so in order to provide the tools which allow for all to realise their full potential, make outstanding academic and personal progress and grow to be equipped for their future lives. Provision may change and develop over time, but our ethos and values remain constant.

Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy is a fully inclusive mainstream infant school serving pupils in Par and St Blazey.

Driven by our core ethos and values, we are committed to providing access to a first-class education for all pupils, which is highly ambitious for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and other vulnerable groups. All pupils are entitled to have access to a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum, which is scaffolded and differentiated to meet individual needs. Pupils are supported to keep up, not catch up. Our staff recognise and are committed to fulfilling their responsibility to ensure that every pupil has an equal opportunity to attain good outcomes in their learning, progress and personal development.

Our SENDCO is responsible for the operation of the Disabilities and Special Educational Needs Policy and co-ordination of specific provision made to support individual children with SEND. We liaise with staff to monitor the progress of pupils and plan further interventions where progress is slower than expected. We regularly have contact with a wide range of external agencies that are able to give specialist support.

Where a child is identified as needing additional support, we aim to work collaboratively with parents to develop provision for a pupil which will support them to develop the skills they need to succeed. We do this in accordance with the ASPIRE graduated response document and the SEND code of practice. If a child needs support which is ongoing they may be added to the record of need and a bespoke support plan will be written. This is currently known as an individual education plan or IEP.

An IEP is a document that contains specific targets that are designed to help a pupil make progress by identifying their barriers and support strategies which will be implemented to with the aim of removing barriers, thus aiding their ongoing learning and development.

As SENDCo, Miss Bignell will work alongside class teachers, pupils and parents to review IEP's termly for all pupils on the record of need. We have a termly SEN Parent Consultation where we can meet to discuss progress and any concerns you may have.

How we support pupils with Individual or Special Needs

If a class teacher feels that a pupil requires support or input that is more than what is provided within the classroom then they should discuss their concerns with the parents. Actions may be agreed as part of that discussion, and it may be useful to set up a review date to discuss progress made and any possible next steps. At this stage, if there is a clear, identified need that has not been addressed through the actions agreed, the pupil may be put on the Record of Need and outside agency involvement discussed.

Mrs Wilson, as SENDCo, will also become part of the process at this point.

We hope to support parents and pupils through this process, explaining each step as it happens, and providing resources and support materials, if requested.

Individual Education Plans (IEP’s)

An IEP is a supporting document that should contain between one and three targets that are designed to help pupils make progress. They might relate to literacy or numeracy, to behaviour or to a physical or social need. All targets are set with the intention of helping a pupil to move on to the next stage and removing barriers to their learning.

As SENDCo, Mrs Wilson will work alongside class teachers, pupils and parents to review IEP's termly for all pupils on the record of need. We have a termly SEN Parent Consultation where we can meet to discuss progress and any concerns you may have.

How you can help to support your child

You know your child the best. If there are certain ways in which we can do things that will further support your child, do let us know. There are set SEN Parent Consultations every term, but teachers are always happy to meet with parents.

School life is very busy, so we do ask that you make an appointment to see your child's teacher via the office.

In addition to this, we have added a range of services below which may be of help to you. If you would like to discuss any of these services further, we are happy to support, or alternatively you can contact them directly.
